EDIUS SP for HDV features Canopus 's proprietary DV codec chip, also found at
the core of Canopus 's acclaimed line of ADVC products. This DV codec chip
provides the best picture quality preservation and audio/video synchronization
during analog-to-DV and DV-to-analog conversion.
The DV codec chip greatly increases EDIUS realtime editing capabilities by
providing constant, realtime DV output from the timeline, without impacting on
system performance or limiting the number of realtime video tracks.
EDIUS SP for HDV is also the first nonlinear editing system to feature full ADVC
functionality. Available from both EDIUS Pro and any other Windows-based NLE
application that supports OHCI, EDIUS SP for HDV provides realtime bidirectional
analog/DV conversion and capture. This feature is also available independently
of any editing application to provide direct analog/DV deck video transfer.
EDIUS SP for HDV also features AV/C-RS-422 control conversion, to provide
control of analog VTRs from within any NLE application, as though they were a DV
device.
Migrate DV content to enhanced HDV/HD in realtime
EDIUS SP for HDV is ready to move existing standard definition video to the
world of HD. With one simple setting, EDIUS SP for HDV edits DV content in HD
resolution, while providing output to HDTV monitors using the onboard HD
component output. EDIUS SP for HDV provides the highest quality realtime up-res
conversion from standard definition to high definition video, and all project
titles, graphics and effects are performed in HD resolution.
Ensuring a painless transition to the world of HD, editors can edit and output
newly-created HDV content to hard disks or DVD-R drives without requiring an HDV
camera or deck.
Realtime HDV Editing
When it comes to realtime editing of HDV and other MPEG formats, Canopus's
leadership in advanced video codec technologies becomes clear.
EDIUS Pro supports editing of true native HDV MPEG-2 transport streams in
realtime. For increased realtime performance and the highest image quality for
editing, HDV footage can be captured using the Canopus HQ (1080/60i, 50i,
720/30p, 25p) codec. The Canopus HQ Codec is a proprietary video compression
algorithm developed by Canopus, for high-quality HD resolution video editing.
The HQ codec supports the HDV resolutions employed by Sony and JVC, 1440 x 1080
and 1280 x 720 respectively, with intra-field coding as opposed to inter-frame
coding featured with HDV. This provides high-quality, frame-accurate editing of
footage, while maintaining the image quality at 4:2:2 chroma sub-sampling,
compared to HDV's 4:2:0 sub-sampling.
Realtime, multi-track, mixed HDV / MPEG editing with other formats is a
capability that is only found in EDIUS Pro.

Let EDIUS NX for HDV take you to the
world of High Definition video production. With its seamless realtime workflow
using any mix of HD and SD video formats, editors can work with unlimited video,
audio and effects layers, while always previewing projects in high-quality, full
resolution High Definition and Standard Definition video.
The move to high definition video production impacts computing power
requirements and realtime editing performance, proportionally . Although HDV and
HD video can be edited on today's systems with a basic OHCI FireWire interface,
the realtime editing performance is strictly limited, and lacks any true full
resolution video output for preview.
The EDIUS NX for HDV solution features advanced hardware that provides editors
with video acquisition and output capabilities, including high-quality, full
resolution component HD / SD video output as well as hardware-accelerated line
scaling and video overlay, for the ultimate realtime HD / SD editing, effects
and compositing performance.
Broad Video Equipment Connectivity and I/O
EDIUS NX for HDV's inputs and outputs provide connectivity to a broad range of
analog and digital video equipment, including HDV, DVCPRO HD**, DVCPRO 50**, DV
and S-VHS decks, as well as broadcast HD / SD monitors*. Connections include
4-pin FireWire, S-Video, composite, unbalanced stereo audio I/O and component HD
/ SD video output*.
Complete HDV Editing
While editing HDV, the ability to view compositions accurately is critical and
only a HD monitor can faithfully display HDV output modes, including 1080i.
EDIUS NX for HDV's Expansion Kit option features component HD video output for
full-quality, full-resolution, realtime monitor output of 1080i HD video.
Additionally, the Expansion Kit module features stereo RCA unbalanced audio
output connectors and incorporates audio processing circuitry to ensure perfect
audio and video synchronization during playback.
EDIUS NX for HDV includes capture support for HDV cameras and decks, including
Sony's HDR-FX1 camera. When used with the Expansion Kit, or any IEEE 1394 OHCI
FireWire controller, EDIUS NX for HDV provides direct capture support from HDV
devices, such as Sony's HDR-FX1, either using the native HDV MPEG-2 transport
stream format or Canopus's proprietary HQ codec.
EDIUS NX for HDV also includes an export-to-tape utility for edited sequences,
and supports full device control options for Sony and JVC HDV devices.
Hardware-based Video Overlay for HD and SD
Editing
Unlike OHCI-based editing systems, EDIUS NX for HDV processes video overlay
using hardware. Video overlay data is written to the graphics card using Direct
Memory Access (DMA). This means a lesser load is placed on the CPU during
editing and realtime playback, and results in better realtime performance using
the same CPU.
Hardware-based Line Scaling for HD Component
Output
When using EDIUS NX for HDV with the Expansion Kit, hardware-based line scaling
is used to convert the native 1440x1080 resolution of HDV and HQ to 1920x1080,
for full-resolution HD component output. With other editing systems, line
scaling is handled by the CPU, which adds additional load and ultimately
restricts realtime editing performance.
Onboard Canopus Hardware DV Codec
EDIUS NX for HDV features an onboard hardware DV codec, which provides
high-quality video streams on demand with unmatched flexibility. Software-based
DV rendering with OHCI hardware utilizes valuable CPU power, thus limiting the
realtime effects and multi-track capabilities available to the editor. EDIUS NX
for HDV relieves the CPU from handling the processor-intensive task of rendering
a DV output stream.
EDIUS NX for HDV's proprietary hardware and device control driver design allows
frame-accurate capture and output to DV devices, not achievable using OHCI
cards. EDIUS NX for HDV's circuitry stabilizes the DV signal for smooth control
while the device control driver is designed and customized to control many
different types of DV device. Frame-accurate control means EDIUS NX for HDV can
output video back to an exact location on DV tape, for perfect insert recording.
When working with DV, EDIUS NX for HDV hardware handles the digital video data
and PCM audio data for each video frame as one data block. The consistent data
block handling at every stage of EDIUS NX for HDV's processing (including the
ring buffer on the main memory, the data buffer on the board memory, and the
codec module on the board) ensures video and audio stay in sync throughout the
capturing, editing and output process.
Realtime High-quality Analog Capture and Output
EDIUS NX for HDV's analog inputs can capture video to Canopus's high-quality
codecs, including DV, lossless, uncompressed, and DVCPRO 50**.
EDIUS NX for HDV's analog outputs always provide high-quality uncompressed YUV
4:2:2 video while editing or designing in EDIUS Pro 3, Adobe® Premiere® Pro,
Adobe After Effects® and Adobe Photoshop®.
Realtime Bidirectional Analog / DV Conversion and
Capture
EDIUS NX for HDV hardware can perform bidirectional conversion between analog
and DV, from within any Windows-based NLE that supports OHCI. This means that
applications such as Avid® Xpress® DV, Vegas® and Adobe® Premiere® Pro can
capture and output DV using EDIUS NX for HDV's analog video I/O. EDIUS NX for
HDV features the same technology found in Canopus's highly-acclaimed series of
ADVC products, offering the very best in picture quality preservation and A/V
synchronization.
This feature is available for systems where either an IEEE 1394 OHCI FireWire
controller or the EDIUS NX for HDV Expansion Kit is present.
Advanced Analog Video Input Enhancement
Technology
EDIUS NX for HDV features onboard analog filtering technology to improve the
quality of analog footage during capture. Digital 3D Y/C Separation separates
the Y/C (S-Video) signal to RGB using chronological information between signals.
Digital 3D Noise Reduction eliminates noise from the analog video signal by
detecting noise based on the characteristics of the video being input. Other
filtering options include 2D Y and 2D C Noise Reduction, Black/White Gain Adjust
and both Horizontal and Vertical Outline Enhancement.
The 2D Y and C noise reduction filters reduce noise based on either the Y input
signal or C input signal. Black Gain Adjust raises the gain level within the
black range of the Y input signal, making black colors clearer, with more
contrast. The White Gain filter lowers the gain level in the white range of the
Y input signal, darkening white colors, with more contrast.
The Horizontal Outline Enhancement filter adds an edge to the Y input signal, to
emphasize horizontal edges, while the Vertical Outline filter detects vertical
edges from the Y input signal and emphasizes them.
EDIUS NX for HDV Hardware Plug-ins for Adobe
EDIUS NX for HDV hardware can also be used from within several popular Adobe
applications. The Adobe Premiere Pro plug-in supports both version 1.0 and 1.5
and provides video capture and output via the EDIUS NX for HDV board. The After
Effects (v6.5) and Photoshop (v7 and CS) plug-ins allow users to preview their
compositions directly on a video monitor in full, uncompressed 4:2:2 YUV
quality, a feature that is especially important when applying color treatments.
